"It's been an amazing ride, 20 years, but also hockey brings you a lot of pressure and stress," he said on Wednesday at a TD Garden news conference a day after he announced his retirement. "So, it will be a nice change to just be able to be the Uber driver for the family for a little bit and just relax."

A soon-to-be Hall of Famer who centered the first line on the best team in hockey during his final season, Bergeron announced on Tuesday that he would not return next season.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are placing goaltender Matt Murray on long-term injured reserve ahead of the 2023-24 season, the team announced Wednesday.

The Maple Leafs said Murray is out indefinitely but did not disclose the nature of the injury. This follows a season in which Murray dealt with a head injury and hip and ankle problems.

Rocky Wirtz, who won three Stanley Cup titles as owner of the Chicago Blackhawks and presided over the team during one of the NHL's biggest scandals, has died. He was 70.

The Blackhawks said in a release that Wirtz died Tuesday, calling it a "sudden passing." No further details were provided.

"Our hearts are very heavy today," Blackhawks CEO Danny Wirtz, Rocky's son, said on social media. "Our dad was a passionate businessman committed to making Chicago a great place to live, work and visit, but his true love was for his family and close friends. ... His passing leaves a huge hole in the hearts of many and we will miss him terribly."

Boston Bruins captain Patrice Bergeron, one of the best two-way forwards ever, announced his retirement Tuesday.

"It is with a full heart and a lot of gratitude that today I am announcing my retirement as a professional hockey player," he said in a first-person story on NHL.com.

The NHL is not looking to add an in-season tournament like the NBA's to its regular-season schedule.

Alex Galchenyuk is entering the NHL and NHLPA's player assistance program after being arrested last week, sources told ESPN, and has apologized to police for his "deeply disrespectful and despicable behavior."

St. Louis Blues backup goaltender Thomas Greiss retired Wednesday after 14 NHL seasons.

Greiss played his final season with St. Louis in 2022-23 and posted a 7-10-0 record and 3.58 goals-against average in 16 starts.

Two-time Stanley Cup winner Patric Hornqvist has announced his retirement after 15 seasons with three teams.

Hornqvist, 36, won back-to-back championships with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016 and 2017, scoring the Cup-clinching goal in Game 6 against the Nashville Predators in 2017.
